Also known as Black or Cherry Birch. Medium growth rate to 40 to 55 feet. It is called Sweet Birch due to its peppermint-like taste and aroma when twigs are broken or crushed. This tree is native to eastern United States from Maine to Georgia. Growth habit is dense and round topped. Smooth, cherry-like bark is reddish-brown to black. The best of all the birches for its bright golden yellow fall color. Very good for naturalizing.
